WHAT IS UNDERTONE? AND HOW TO FIND OUT YOURS?

DOES IT MATTER TO KNOW YOUR UNDERTONES? HELL YES!

Have you ever been in this situation? You see a nice outfit or some awesome jewellery and it looks amazing on the model or in person? But it doesn’t look right on you? You can’t explain why, but the eye doesn’t like what it sees. It seems like we all know what it feels like, and it’s because most of us don’t know our own skin undertone. By knowing your undertone you can pick out colours that will make you look fresher and that includes the colour of clothes, jewellery, hair and even makeup!

By saying that, it also has to do with the shade of the colour that you choose. For example, you might look better in a particular red because colours have warm and cool tones to it too. Choosing the right tone will complement your skin tone and vice-versa if you picked an opposite tone to your own it’ll make you look duller. It might sound complicated but I’ll break it down right now.

WHAT’S AN UNDERTONE?

An undertone is a colour from underneath the surface of your skin, and it affects the overall hue of the skin. There are three different undertones – warm, cool, and neutral. You might think that you have never heard of the term “undertone” before, but you probably did. If you have seen makeup products that feature shades like “cool linen” or “warm bisque,” these descriptions refer to skin undertones.

– Warm skin undertone: The underlying colours of the skin are peach, yellow, and/or gold.

– Cool skin undertone: The skin has the underlying hints of blue and red tones.

– Neutral skin undertone: The skin has a mixture of both cool and warm tones.

SO WHY IS KNOWING YOUR SKIN UNDERTONE EVEN IMPORTANT?

This refers to the situation we have mentioned at the beginning, where some colour doesn’t suit you, and you can’t quite place why. Well, the colour is not an issue. It is the undertone of that colour that you have to take into consideration, and if that undertone goes together with your skin’s undertone. Determining your skin undertone is going to determine what colours suit you well.

HOW TO FIND YOUR SKIN UNDERTONE?

Now that you know what an undertone is and why it is essential, let’s discuss a little bit about how to find your skin undertone. There are a few, very simple tests that you can do to determine your skin undertone, and that will change your life forever.

UNDERTONE TEST #1: VEIN COLOR

They can either be blueish/purple or greenish. The veins that are blue or purple mean that you have a cool undertone, while the greenish veins say that your undertone is warm. If your veins are neither green or blue/purple, then your undertone is neutral.

UNDERTONE TEST #2: WHITE VS OFF-WHITE

For this test, you need to hold up a piece of white fabric and an off-white fabric next to your face. This fabric can be a dress, a shirt, whatever you have handy, it is just important that it is pure while and pure off-white. Also, it would be best if you stood somewhere in the natural light, like in front of the window. Hold the material next to your face (or have a friend hold it for you) and take a good look at yourself. If you look better next to the white material, you have a warm undertone. But if the white makes you look washed out and pale and you look better next to the off-white, you have a cool undertone. And if you look good next to both, you are neutral.

UNDERTONE TEST #3: BURN VS TAN

For this one, think a little about how your skin tends to tan. If you get sunburned very quickly, or your firstly burn and then tan, you probably have a cool undertone. If you tan quickly and easily without getting sunburned, you’re likely warm-toned. And lastly, if you tan slowly, but don’t burn very often, you’re most likely neutral.
